Known for his excellence in microsurgical ear procedures, Dr. Vibhor Malhotra performs Stapedotomy to help patients suffering from conductive hearing loss caused by otosclerosis.
What is Stapedotomy?
Stapedotomy is a delicate ear surgery to improve hearing by replacing the fixed stapes bone (one of the three small bones in the middle ear) with a tiny prosthesis that conducts sound vibrations efficiently.
Why does it happen?
Otosclerosis causes abnormal bone growth around the stapes, restricting its movement and leading to progressive hearing loss. When hearing aids are no longer effective, Stapedotomy becomes the treatment of choice.
Procedure:
Dr. Malhotra performs this surgery under local or general anaesthesia using a microscope. A small hole is made in the base of the stapes, and a micro-prosthesis is inserted to restore the transmission of sound to the inner ear. The operation usually takes less than an hour and results in significant hearing improvement for most patients.
